For many IT positions this may ring true, but for the Database Administrator (DBA) the job isn’t disappearing as much as it is dramatically changing.

The big way these changes will come about is through the emergence of Database as a Service (DBaaS) providers that will offload many of the manual database management duties to a cluster of cloud servers.

In this post we’ll spend some time digging into the future of the DBA and how the DBaaS model is and will change things for Database Administrators industry-wide.

What is a DBA and what do they do?

To put it really simply, database administrators manage, implement and configure databases for an organization. DBAs must have a sophisticated knowledge about how databases function in a wide range of environments.

They must also become certified to work some larger, enterprise-level organizations. This is largely because there is a lot more data at stake. Additionally, DBAs are usually charged with developing, or at least assisting, with high availability (HA) and disaster recovery plans (DRPs).

They also must have a solid grasp of database reporting and monitoring, so they can quickly adapt to changes in database systems as the business changes.

How the DBA role will change in the DBaaS economy

As you can easily imagine, these tasks are incredibly time and resource consuming. Manually performing these tasks require a lot of money, and sometimes a lot of manpower, depending on the size of the organization. In the years ahead, DBAs will likely function more as cloud-solution consultants rather than the driving force behind database management. A lot of the manual tasks will be offloaded to automated processes in the cloud database. For all intents and purposes, tomorrow’s DBAs will consult the enterprise on the best DBaaS providers available, and how they fit within a given organization.

How will DBaaS affect the DBA job market?

To say that the DBaaS revolution will have no effect whatsoever on the DBA job market is a little disingenuous. For starters, as more tasks become automated in the cloud, the need for a large team of DBAs will no longer be necessary. These staffs will probably shrink down to a few specialized cloud-based database management professionals. The future of the DBA job market will be reserved for those who have adapted to the changes in database technology, and have a sophisticated understanding of how to configure and manage databases – even if manual database system configuration is no longer necessary.

The bottom line is that while the role of the database administrator is changing, it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. Salesforce.com is the global leader is sales tracking and customer relation management. Workday, Inc.

Workday, Inc. provides cloud-based applications that companies can use to organize human resources, accounting, and other employee-related activities. Integration with Workday is not an issue as they are actually out in front. Workday, Inc. is not one that would normally be on this list, except they have shown some strong support from the public sector over the last few months. Their 2012 IPO spiked more than 70% on its initial trading day and is reported to be the largest venture-backed IPO since Facebook. In an age where financial companies rarely throw their money into tech (thanks to the .com boom/bust), Workday, Inc. is bucking that trend. Prior to the financial world, Workday, Inc. earned the recognition from many major companies including Aviva, Thomson Reuters, Time Warner, and Chiquita Brands to name a few. These are some of the many companies who have come out and publicly announced contracts with Workday, Inc. It’s no longer deniable. We may as well simply accept it. The prophecies were true. 2012 was indeed the year of the cloud, a raucous success all round in fact, and as a result, in this bright and early 2013 dawning sunshine, we are sat witnessing the ever continuing fallout of this unabashed cloud championing. Everybody’s upping sticks and making for the cloud, no matter whether you’re in big business or are a humble SME, or even a consumer (as the recent CES happily proved), from Nvidia’s cloud gaming, to Toshiba’s cloud TVs, to Google’s perpetually updating Chromebooks and their affiliated cloud services: everybody has their head in the cloud, and this isn’t going away in 2013!

Certainly not, it seems, if The European Commission have anything to do with it. The last true fortress of those opposed to the idea of the cloud stands amongst a fear that the cloud simply isn’t secure. Of course, with sensitive business documents, personal details and many more private files that must be kept safe and secure at all costs being dealt with, there’s always a large emphasis on digital protection and prevention. Whilst security has always been a top priority across the board when it comes to cloud implementation, The EC have released a statement outlining plans to help the cause of a secure, cloud based future.

Essentially, what we’re looking at is an update of the legislation that governs such technologies, so as to keep in line with the capabilities of the cloud; allowing for a more thorough and expressive set of guidelines that keep the industry safe, and encourage innovation.

With interoperability; the coming together of dynamic systems and organizations to work in unison, data portability and reversibility at the top of the strategy’s aims, as well as an update to the certification standards throughout the EU, and a standardized platform that would increase public sector buying power and allow for progression; a ‘Pan-European Cloud Partnership’, this rather intrepid step forward is a good sign of things to come, and the continuing evolution of the cloud in 2013!

Indeed, beyond the implementation of the strategy itself, it is reported that the ideal is for it to remain fluid and malleable with the unending, omnipresent advances in general technology. The issue with many pieces of legislation that cover technology related usage, is the tendency for the usability of the tech to outgrow the regulations, and we are left with incongruence across the board. With this new strategy however, there will be no such misalignment, due to the flexibility of the statements within.

What this will, in essence mean, is that security will no longer be the hideaway of those shying from making the move upwards. In fact, with the strategy in place, the cloud will be more secure even than the physical alternatives, as in most cases it is already, not to mention more convenient and able to deliver an all-new competitive edge. With the EC set to define a strategy that will double up security, will there be any reason not to take to the skies?

Whilst 2012 was undoubtedly the year of the cloud, does that mean that 2013 is simply to sit back and wait for the slowly turning tides of the times to shuffle everybody into its latest pockets of technology? Certainly not; and with its voraciously increasing popularity, business policies such as BYOD and a never-ending need for refinement, it might well be that 2013 is just as big for the cloud as the previous annum. We may only wait and see!

Improved information, improved communications and, ultimately, improved profit are some of the benefits offered by a digital economy.

Businesses all over the world are seeing revenue rise thanks to the integration of software and cloud services. According to economists, the internet contributed $50 billion to the Australian economy last year, which is 3.6% of the GDP and equal to the contribution made by iron exports in a country historically dependent on mining (www.abc.net.au).

Australia has targeted a place in the top five OECD countries by 2020, and it’s making an effort to increase the number of organizations operating online to provide the needed boost to productivity and profitability. (www.edhusic.com) through a number of initiatives:

  • 457 Australian visa sponsorships are being granted to ICT specialists, with three specialist ICT positions in the top 15 users, emphasizing the demand for digital skills.
  • The National Broadband Network is being developed with the intention to reach 93% of the Australian population by 2020.
  • Data centers, such as Hewlett Packard’s $200m Aurora Data Center in Sydney, are being set up to support cloud computing.

SAP Helps to Drive the Development of Digital Skills

Priorities for this effort include the adoption of technologies like cloud services, and the development of skills needed to harness these technologies.

The number of students undertaking IT degrees in Australia has declined by 50 per cent over the past 10 years. The Australian Computer Society believes there simply aren’t enough IT professionals in higher education, and that educational institutions haven’t done enough to promote IT courses. As a result, Australia is forced to depend on international students and migrants to provide the skills needed (www.computerworld.com.au).

SAP partnered with the Brisbane North Institute of TAFE to provide a series of online SAP courses. This is part of an effort by SAP to encourage interest in Information Technology amongst younger generations, and invest in the talent that will be essential to Australia’s economic growth.  

SAP also recently made a deal with the NSW Government’s Trade & Investment Agency to implement Business ByDesign – its cloud-based platform. This will be the biggest implementation of the software yet, involving the transfer of at least 16 companies from legacy software systems to the cloud. These are examples of efforts that go some way towards addressing the IT skills shortage and enabling the adoption of powerful internet technologies.

Meanwhile, events like the SAP Innojam serve to encourage innovation. The 30-hour competition gathers SAP customers and employees, as well as general technology enthusiasts and tests their creativity and problem-solving abilities. The second Innojam conference challenged attendees to come up with software-based solutions to the severe environmental damage and displacement caused by bushfires.

In this way, people learn to apply IT to solving real-world problems and glimpse the solutions made possible by a digital economy; which can provide benefits that go far beyond powering industries.
